In
the footsteps of his father, Szakcsi Lakatos Béla, he has also
chosen the piano as his instrument. From the age of six to twelve
he had a classical education then his interest turned to jazz music.
So thus Szakcsi Lakatos Béla Jr. has became one of the most prominent
pianists of the domestic jazz scene. Since than he has played with
several foreign and Hungarian musicians such as Lakatos "Ablakos" Dezső,
Tony Lakatos, Rick Margitza, Jack DeJohnet and John Patitucci.
While he was studying jazz at Bartók Béla Conservatory of Music
was already performing with eminent Hungarian artists like Tomsics
Rudolf, Kőszegi Imre, Pecek Lakatos Géza in festivals. In 1989
the Új Rákfogó group was born, members included Oláh Kálmán - keybords,
Torma Rudolf - bass, Balázs Elemér - drum, Müller György - percussions,
Nagy József - tenor saxophone. He also became the member of the
Babos Band which was formed in 1994 (Babos Gyula, Szappanos György,
Borlai Gergő and Szakcsi Lakatos Béla Jr.) accompanying Katona
Klári. They performed in a number of festivals in Hungary and abroad.
This led to the formation of his own band performing as a trio
and an expanded quintet playing traditional acoustic fusion. Later
on he founded a band with the homecoming Tűzkő Csaba, in which
Hárs Viktor played the bass and Pecek Lakatos András played the
drums.
In 1998 he was invited to play on Pege Aladár's album and in 2000
the Szakcsi Jr. Quartet (Torma Rudolf - bass, Balázs Elemér - drum,
Tűzkő Csaba - tenor saxophone, Szakcsi Jr. - piano, Szalóki Béla
- trombone) released its own album entitled Happen beside containing
his own pieces recalling works from e.g. Freddie Hubbart and John
Coltraine.
In 2003 he arrived at the most important stage in his career being
given the opportunity to recorde with two world famous musicians,
the drummer Jack DeJohnet and the bassist John Patitucci. The expected
release of the album is 2005.
In 2001 was formed one of his present formation the Bop-Bee Trio
(Lakatos Pecek András - drum, Orbán György - bass, Szakcsi Jr.
- keybords), playing their own pieces and in classical trio formation
playing with modern tunes. They have performed in a number of festivals,
clubs and in 2003, they met greet success in Bukarest and in the
Brasso Festival.
In 2004, The Tribute to Charlie Parker Band (Tűzkő Csaba - tenor
sax, Bacsó Kristóf - alt sax, Egri János - bass, Lakatos Pecek
Géza - drum) was formed commemorating perhaps the greatest musician
of jazz history Charlie "Bird" Parker.
The latest line-up of the Szakcsi Jr Trio is: Szakcsi Jr - piano,
Horváth (Pluto) József - bass, Balázs Elemér - drums.
