Kornél Horváth started his musical career as a flutist , but later on he became interested in the world of percussion music. In those years there were not many opportunities for a Hungarian musician to travel abroad or study in a foreign country, that is why he started practising by himself with the help of listening to recordings. Since the very beginning he has worked out a whole new individual finger-hit technique for hand percussion instruments. Today Kornél is not only the most sought-after percussionist in his country but he is also well known all over Europe. He is a jazz musician whose music is strongly rooted in the traditions of his homeland, Hungary and of eastern Europe - at the same time elements of African, Indian, Arab and Latin American music can be revealed fusing in a unique sound that is very much characteristic of his. His artistic output encompasses numerous recordings from renaissance music through rock, pop, jazz to contemporay improvised music and world music. His solo album the RAG HANDED was released in Italy in 1992 by Sentemo Records. Nowdays there are some exciting duo formations Kornél plays in the most often, one of these is a duo with the Hungarian violinist Zoltan Lantos, and another duo with the Hungarian pianist Bela Szakcsi Lakatos, and the latest duo is with the very talented young Hungarian cymbalom player called Miklos Lukacs. He has been the member of Zoltan Lantos's Mirrorworld Quartet and the Percussion Project with Carlo Rizzo and Stoyan Yankoulov and the Black Sea Trio with the Ukranian guitarist Enver Izmailov and the Bulgarian saxophonist Anatoly Vapirov. His sensitive sounding fantasy, the virtuosity of his obsessed playing either on a vase or on a small box of generous wood seem unsurpassable. Comparing to his fellow-percussionists Trilok Gurtu, Giovanni Hadalgo and Airto Moreire, the difference is that Horváth comes from a country that has no traditions in folk percussion music.
