WHERE IS HUNGARIAN
JAZZ HEADING FOR?
"In each issue we interview a musician about what
he is currently working on and what he thinks the most important
thing is in his life at the moment. What is it that he regards progressive
in Hungarian jazz? Borbély Mihály, 46, is a saxophonist who likes
experimenting with different styles of music. He was the head of
the Jazz Faculty of the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy for years where
he has been teaching for sixteen years. He is one of the founding
members of the Vujicsics band and leads two other groups: the Borbély
Workshop and Quartet B, which are both going to come out with a
new album. I invited him to tell us about his career in a few words."

Authenticity
And Improvisation
During more than a quarter century of its existence, the world famous
Vujicsics ensemble has not spoiled us with dozens of albums. That
is just why their recent relase ofnew material on the ˇPodravina”
CD is welcome event. In connection with this event, we spoke with
Mihály Borbély, the wind instrument soloist for this authentic Southern
Slav folk music group. The diversity of the topics covered was a
guaranteed in advance by the fact that Borbély is participating
in various jazz projects in addition to Vujicsics, and he is also
a sought-after session musician for a variety of other musical productions.

Herbie Mann on Quartet B
"Believe me that every musician who played with me
here in Fonó qualifies as fitting the best bands of the world anywhere.
I feel especially the musical world of the Borbély band close to
me. In addition to the leader - who surprized me with the wide selection
of his special wind instruments - I was enchanted by the play of
the guitarist Mihály György" (Universal Jazz II. évf. 3-4.
szám)
"This night with Quartet B showed us how to fan up
the flame"
