József Barcza Horváth was born in 1974 in Budapest. At the beginning of his career for some time he played in both symphonic orchestras and various jazz bands. Between 1995 and 1997 he was a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under the direction of Claudio Abbado, and from 1997 to 1999 he played in concerts with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. At the same time, still young, he achieved success in the area of jazz, for instance in the 1995 international Jazz Juniors Competition he won Best Bassist Prize.

In recent years he has been one of the influential bass players in the Hungarian jazz scene, and his playing can be heard on over 25 discs. He has recorded with Gábor Gadó (One glimpse is not enough, 1999; Greetings from the Angel, 2000), Off Course, and Erik Truffaz (Street of secrets, 1999; Tales from the lighthouse, 2002), the Kaltenecker Trio (Rainy Films, 2001; Triangular Expression, 2002), the Trio Yengibarjan, and Frank London (Tango Passion, 2001; Pandoukht, 2003), Gábor Winand (Corners of my mind, 2002; Agent spiritual, 2003; Different garden, 2004), as well as Gábor Juhász and Palle Mikkelborg (60/40, 2003). He has performed with well-known musicians such as Kirk Lightsey, Benny Bailey, Erik Truffaz, Ray Anderson, Palle Mikkelborg, Frank London, Eivind Aarset, Ferenc Snétberger, Tony Lakatos, Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, etc.

In addition to jazz he regularly participates in productions in other genres: he has played in bands with famous folk performers (Ági Szalóki, Mitsoura), he has made pop music recordings (Klári Katona, Caramel) and has composed music to the puppet play Nádi, Paca, Kóc. In 2008 he participated in the recording of two albums: Tau by the Zoltán Lantos' Mirrorworld, and Golden Earrings by Nikoletta Szőke.
